HARRIET TUBMAN

Harriet Tubman has been one of the anchors of creative work and self care. She has allowed me to persevere in spite of fear. She has helped me to remember to save myself first, then others. She is the ultimate freedom fighter!

Harriet Tubman's real name is Araminta "Minty" Ross. she adopts the name "Harriet" from her mother, Harriet ross. Harriet has inspired me to always follow the path that I am on and to never look back. I used a "green mint type of color to give honor to her middle name.

She may not be physically here, on this in earth,  but you better believe she's left a legacy behind. During my fall 2018 field study, I attended an event called "Girl Trek" which advocates for black girls and women's health, healing, empowerment and right to green space for physical activity. Their mission has also been inspired by the heroic Harriet Tubman and they've created a Harriet Handbook in her honor. When you pledge yourself to walk, you choose to save yourself. You then can begin to share your story and message and outreach to save another black girl and/or women in your life that you love and care about. This is in the spirit that when black women walk, change happens and history is made. You can learn more about girl trek's movement here.

Harriet Tubman is absolutely, 100%, a goddess. She is the epitome of a role model for restoring the power, humanity, love and resilience in ourselves and our community just through the power of walking. She not only inspires movements and methodologies but art too.  â€‹

I began writing a poem in her honor while I was stenciling her name on some art. I ended up just keeping the poem.
